About the Department of Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich is one of the leading nuclear medicine clinics in Europe and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

In nuclear medicine, we use radioactive substances (radiopharmaceuticals) to visualize various functions and dysfunctions in our body. Our clinic is a world leader in the development and continuous advancement of so-called hybrid imaging, which combines functional and molecular imaging with radiopharmaceuticals with anatomical imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition to the diagnosis of disease patterns, nuclear medicine also uses special radiopharmaceuticals for the therapy of various tumor diseases. While therapies of thyroid disorders are among the classics in the nuclear field, a growing number of specific treatments for other cancer types (focusing on theragnostic concepts) have been developed over the past years. Our therapies are within the theragnostic framework, where targeted diagnostic tools are paired with the targeted therapeutic product where often only the radiactive isotope is different and either allow to visualize or treat the malignancy.
