Organ transplants have been performed at the University Hospital Zurich for over 50 years. Heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas and islet transplants are performed at the transplant center. There is also a program for allogeneic and autologous stem cell transplants.
The management of the Transplantation Center is supplemented by an international advisory committee and an advisory board made up of representatives from referring hospitals.
The structure of the transplant center is based on the individual transplant programs. These are led by organ-specific teams, each consisting of a surgical and a medical partner, who are supported by numerous subspecialties. Their experts treat and care for their patients before, during and after transplantation, for the most part on a shared ward. At the end of 2007, the opening of the Transplantation Center created a joint structure for the optimization of resources and interdisciplinary teamwork.
