New MRI scanner for radio-oncology at the USZ

A further step towards more precise and individualized radiotherapy. In May 2025, the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University Hospital Zurich put a new MRI scanner into operation.

This device is an important step on the way to modern and patient-friendly radiotherapy. The scanner can be used for many different tasks - for example, in preparation for radiotherapy or during brachytherapy. The larger opening makes the examination more comfortable for patients, especially for people with claustrophobia. Because the scanner works with a weaker magnetic field, people with metal implants can also be examined well. The device is centrally located in the therapy area so that we can organize our processes more efficiently and shorten waiting times. The installation was technically very demanding - the short video on our website shows how the device was put into place with centimeter precision. Adaptive radiotherapy is one of the focal points of our work. The radiation is adjusted daily to the current position of the tumor. With the new MRI scanner, we can make these adjustments even more precisely, quickly and safely - in order to target the tumor tissue in the best possible way and spare healthy tissue. We look forward to sharing more insights and progress with the new device soon!
