Here are the important elements of this course:
- BLS (Basic Life Support): BLS comprises basic life-saving measures carried out by first aiders to increase the probability of survival in life-threatening situations. This includes resuscitating people who are not breathing or have no heartbeat. BLS includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED).
- AED (Automated External Defibrillator): The course teaches the skills required to use an AED safely and effectively. An AED is a portable device that is used to deliver an electric shock in the event of cardiac arrest or life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia in order to restore normal heart rhythm.
- SRC (Standard First Aid and CPR/AED): SRC stands for Standard First Aid and CPR/AED (First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator). This part of the course includes general first aid measures that can be used by laypersons in emergencies. This includes treating injuries, heart attacks, strokes, burns, poisoning and other medical emergencies.
Regular refresher courses are important to ensure that the skills acquired are up to date and can be applied correctly.
