Application of proton therapy
In proton therapy, tumors are bombarded with fast proton particles and not with photons (high-energy X-rays). Proton radiation can be focused even more precisely on the tumor and is therefore gentler on some tumors – but not all – than “classic” photon therapy.
Proton irradiation is particularly advantageous for childhood brain tumors, eye tumors and rare tumors of the base of the skull and the spine. For many years, PSI has been a world leader in the technical and clinical research and application of proton therapy for the indications described above.
Prof. Dr. Damien C. Weber, the clinical director of proton therapy at PSI, is closely integrated into our Interdisciplinary Center for High Precision Radiotherapy. This gives our patients quick and direct access to this modern radiation therapy.
