Dr. Pijnappel was a key investigator in the landmark DENSE trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2019, which demonstrated that supplemental MRI screening significantly reduces interval cancers in women with extremely dense breast tissue. This influential research has shaped international screening guidelines.
His expertise includes breast MRI, mammography screening, and diagnostic breast imaging. Dr. Pijnappel has been an active contributor to the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI), co-authoring important consensus statements, including the 2022 EUSOBI recommendations on screening for women with extremely dense breasts and the 2025 European Society of Radiology practice recommendations on diagnostic workup for patients with symptomatic breast disease.
Throughout his career at UMC Utrecht, Dr. Pijnappel established himself as a leader in European breast imaging, contributing to evidence-based practice guidelines that continue to influence clinical care across Europe and beyond.
