Long Covid consultation hour

Patients with persistent problems following COVID-19 infection are assessed and cared for on an interdisciplinary basis in our Long COVID consultation.

The responsible medical team will ask you about your symptoms, examine you and, depending on the symptoms and indications, arrange for further examinations such as a lung function test, a CT scan or a heart ultrasound (echocardiography).

The Clinic for Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene is the competence center for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 infection and disease. Our clinic cares for all patients hospitalized at the USZ with COVID-19 infection and has played a key role in international studies and national guidelines on the management and treatment of COVID-19 disease. Please note that we do not carry out IV registrations or IV clarifications.

Our outpatient consultation hours perform a triage function. Your visit is primarily a one-off assessment: we record your current situation, assess your complaints and – if indicated – initiate further clarifications or referrals to other specialist disciplines.

Please note that this consultation is usually a one-off consultation. We cannot offer longer-term follow-up and cannot continue to see patients regularly or repeatedly in our consultation hours after this initial assessment. Further treatment and support will be provided by your general practitioner or the referring doctors.

We do not use any experimental drugs or carry out any off-label therapies as part of this consultation. In addition, no clinical studies are carried out in this consultation or patients are included in studies.

  • The COVID-19 infection was documented by PCR test or positive serology.
  • The symptoms (e.g. fatigue, memory impairment, shortness of breath) are still present 12 weeks after the confirmed COVID infection, are present for at least 8 weeks and have an impact on their daily life.
  • To register, please contact your family doctor. She/he will refer you to the Long Covid consultation.
  • When making a referral, we need all the information from your GP about any previous illnesses, medication you are taking and previous laboratory findings
  • Many of the long-COVID symptoms improve significantly within the first twelve weeks after an acute Covid illness. Accordingly, an assignment can only be made after this time. However, if symptoms occur during this initial period, close supervision and support from your family doctor is very sensible.

  • Our consultation hours are very busy. We do everything we can to do justice to all our patients.
  • The waiting period is currently 6 months.
  • If the complaints due to waiting times have already decreased significantly and you think that the appointment is no longer necessary, contact us and we will cancel the appointment free of charge.

  • We see ourselves as the first point of contact and clarify on the basis of the preliminary findings whether further somatic investigations are necessary and which specialists may need to be involved (neuroimmunology, cardiology, pneumology, psychiatry, etc.).
  • Even before the first consultation, you will receive various questionnaires from us, on the basis of which we will assess your main complaint.
  • In the presence of severe neurocognitive impairments (e.g. memory impairment) or fatigue with work restrictions, triage to neuroimmunology is performed (waiting times currently 2-3 months).
  • We offer an integrative treatment concept with the involvement of various specialist services (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, energy management).
