Vitamin D supplementation appears to be safe. However, there is no evidence that it improves the symptoms of MS or lesions.
In 12 studies (933 participants with multiple sclerosis (MS)), vitamin D was compared with placebo, routine treatment or low doses of vitamin D.
- There were no effects of vitamin D on relapses, physical limitations or the number of lesions detected by MRI. The effects on quality of life and fatigue were also unclear. The evidence was uncertain due to the limited number of studies and their low quality.
- Vitamin D has little or no effect on the risk of serious adverse events.
