Neuroophthalmology

Around two thirds of the human brain is dedicated to processing visual information and controlling eye movements. From this it can be deduced that it is not always purely eye diseases that bring patients to the ophthalmologist's practice.

Many visual disorders can occur on the way from the retina of both eyes via the two optic nerves and their intersection to the various visual centers in the depths of the brain. But problems can also occur on the way from the brain to the nerves that control eye movements and pupil reactions.

Sudden or gradual visual disturbances in one or both eyes, double vision and changes in the position of the eyelids or pupils are examples of problems that also fall within the field of neuro-ophthalmology.

Neuro-ophthalmology at the Zurich Eye Clinic

Neuro-ophthalmology is very well developed at the Zurich Eye Clinic, which is due to a long tradition and the good networking of the Eye Clinic with other clinics and institutes. Neuro-ophthalmology is therefore well embedded in the newly founded Interdisciplinary Center for Dizziness and Neurological Visual Disorders under the umbrella of the Clinical Neurocenter at the USZ.

From the suspected clinical diagnosis to the various additional examinations, such as imaging procedures and laboratory tests, through to medical or surgical treatment, the team at the eye clinic is supported by many specialists from related disciplines – with the aim of restoring the patient’s best possible vision.
