Vasectomy / ligation

A vasectomy is an irreversible method of male contraception. Before a vasectomy is performed, there is a consultation with the urologist, who will provide detailed information about the consequences of the procedure.

Family planning

Male sterilization is actually an irreversible procedure. It is possible to reunite the severed vas deferens by means of a complex microsurgical operation. However, it does not restore fertility in all cases. You should therefore be aware in advance that it is highly unlikely that you will be able to have children of your own after sterilization.

Costs of the procedure

The costs of a vasectomy are not covered by health insurance. We recommend that patients enquire with their health insurance company about possible cost coverage. If you are interested, please contact us for a quote.

The vasectomy procedure

The procedure itself is short and is performed under local anesthesia. The vas deferens are exposed via two small incisions in the testicles, cut and the ends closed (non-scalpel vasectomy). The seminal fluid remains unchanged, but no longer contains sperm. The skin is sutured using a self-dissolving suture.

You should take it easy for two days after the procedure and refrain from sex and sport for 10 days.

Otherwise, all physical activities (except cycling or motorcycling) can be resumed from the first day after the vasectomy. You can return to work the day after the operation.

Am I immediately sterile after the operation?

Important: Infertility usually only occurs after around eight to twelve weeks or around 30 ejaculations (seminal effusions), as sperm can still be present in the seminal vesicles and prostate before this. Infertility must be confirmed by an examination of the seminal fluid (spermiogram). Until then, methods of contraception should definitely be used.

Does the contraception affect sex life?

No, the testicles remain unaffected, the hormone balance remains completely unchanged. The sexual drive, the ability to have an erection and ejaculation remain unchanged.
