Social freezing – freezing unfertilized eggs

With social freezing, you can preserve your chances of having a child, even if your desire to have a child only becomes actual after your fertile phase. From the age of 35, fertility declines rapidly, pregnancy after the 40th birthday is often very difficult and above the 45th birthday the genetic material of so many eggs is altered that a healthy pregnancy is a rarity.

Unfortunately, we cannot fully compensate for this reduction with the classic fertility treatment methods. However, if you freeze your eggs in good time, your fertility can be preserved beyond this period.

In Switzerland, egg cells may be stored for ten years. If you want to have children at a fertile age, you would first try to get pregnant without our support. If this does not lead to a pregnancy, you are welcome to use the eggs frozen for you. If necessary, these are thawed and fertilization is attempted via ICSI treatment. This ensures that only one sperm actually reaches the egg. The resulting embryos can then be transferred back into the uterus.

The procedure, opportunities, risks and costs of social freezing largely correspond to IVF. You are welcome to orientate yourself there. In contrast to IVF, however, the process is interrupted after the eggs have been retrieved and only resumed when your desire to have children becomes a reality.

Security

Our cryotanks are equipped with state-of-the-art safety systems and a competent team is available around the clock to deal with any emergencies. This means that your valuable eggs are optimally protected at all times. Being part of a proven, long-standing and solid organization like the USZ ensures that your eggs are available when you need them.

Organization and costs

Understandably, you want to know in advance what costs you will incur.

In the case of social freezing, you are responsible for the treatment costs from the start of hormone treatment. You can expect to pay 4,000 to 5,000 francs per treatment cycle at our center, depending on the cost. A treatment cycle comprises the implementation and monitoring of hormone therapy (stimulation) and egg retrieval (puncture). In addition, there are any costs for freezing (cryopreservation) and storing the eggs of 700 francs and the annual storage fee of 400 francs.

We need hormones to mature the egg cells (stimulation). Depending on the product and the amount of hormone required, the additional costs amount to between 1,000 and 2,000 francs.
