PMOS – What Is It?

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is a condition with a wide range of clinical presentations and is the most common endocrine disorder in young women. Some sufferers experience irregular (oligomenorrhea) or absent bleeding (amenorrhea). In rare cases, menstrual cycles are shortened (polymenorrhea). Others suffer from skin problems or increased body hair, possibly due to increased male hormones in the blood (hyperandrogenemia). Often, but not always, the ovaries contain an increased number of small follicles. However, these are not true ovarian cysts, but rather small follicles whose development has stalled. The former term “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)” was therefore misleading and has been replaced by the new term “Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome (PMOS).” This approach better reflects the current understanding of the disease as a disorder affecting the hormonal, metabolic, and ovarian systems.

More About PMOS

Why is a PMOS diagnosis important?

PMOS can lead to long-term health consequences such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, mental health conditions such as depression, or even uterine cancer (endometrial carcinoma). In addition, the many follicles can prevent regular ovulation and thus lead to reduced fertility. Cosmetic issues (excessive body hair, acne) can also affect your quality of life
