Liver biopsy

Based on previous examinations, you are suspected of having liver disease. Microscopic examination of the liver tissue and comparison of the results with blood tests can provide a more precise picture and clarify possible treatment.

Procedure

An infusion is placed in the arm before the examination. Ultrasound is used to determine the appropriate site for the liver biopsy. After local anesthesia of the skin and muscles, a needle is inserted on the right side of the body between the lower ribs and tissue is removed from the underlying liver. This process only takes a few seconds. You will be monitored for at least four hours after the puncture and may occasionally experience slight pain. If necessary, you will be given a painkiller. An ultrasound check is carried out on the same day.

Preparation

You must not eat anything in the last six hours before the liver biopsy. You may drink up to two hours before the examination. Blood-thinning agents incl. aspirin-containing preparations and most painkillers should be discontinued seven days before the liver biopsy.

Aftercare

For 24 hours after the biopsy, you should avoid physical exertion and, if possible, not be alone at home. If you experience increasing pain, circulatory problems (e.g. dizziness), shortness of breath or deterioration in your general condition, inform your doctor.
