The new MITTE1|2 campus is being financed with borrowed capital, among other things: Of the total costs of 950 million, the Canton of Zurich is financing 690 million, with the remaining funds being provided by the USZ.
The new Campus MITTE1|2 building is being jointly financed by the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and the Canton of Zurich. The canton borrows capital for this purpose and makes it available to the USZ as a low-interest loan. This means that construction costs can be covered in the long term at particularly good conditions. This solution is expected to result in interest savings of around CHF 50 million over the entire term of the loans (2026-2040). This means that the new building is not only architecturally sustainable, but also financially sustainable.
Part of the financing can later be converted into equity of the USZ. This further strengthens the hospital’s financial independence. The USZ is an independent institution under public law that is integrated into the state budget of the Canton of Zurich. Both the bonds taken out directly by the USZ and those of the canton are reported in the balance sheet under non-current financial liabilities.
The financing transaction has no impact on the investment prioritization of the USZ or the planned construction progress.
