Information for those required to register cancer

The Federal Council’s Health 2020 strategy

The number of older people and thus chronic illnesses is increasing, current structures are geared towards acute care and there is a lack of transparency and controllability: with the Health2020 strategy, the Federal Council is optimally aligning the healthcare system to these challenges.

The new provisions on cancer registration are also related to this. The Cancer Registration Act (KRG) enacted by the Federal Assembly in 2018 stipulates that cancers and precancerous lesions must be registered throughout Switzerland.

KRG-compliant data transmission to the cancer registry (KR)

From January 1, 2020, doctors, pathologists, laboratories and hospitals are obliged to submit cancer-related data to the CR within four weeks of collection. The reportable data can be made available to the LR in electronic or paper form. In order to keep the reporting effort within manageable limits, reports may be forwarded to the LR that are prepared anyway as part of the professional activity. This includes, for example, tumor board, operation, pathology, histology, cytology or hospital discharge reports, doctor’s letters or extracts from the medical history. Important: AHV no. and information date (patient information on cancer registration and the right to object) are now also included. Doctors are obliged to forward the data, with the exception of when the cancer registry has explicitly confirmed the objection. The obligation to notify also applies to service providers if the patient communicates his or her veto verbally or signs such a veto with or to the doctor. According to (Art. 6, para. 2 KRV), the doctor’s obligation to notify is only waived if the patient already has a confirmation of objection issued by the cancer registry.
