Cohort studies

The IKC is a partner and the central laboratory for several major, long-term cohort studies.

The most prominent examples are:

  • The SNSF-funded SAPALDIA (Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Disease in Adults) cohort investigates the influence of air pollution and other risk factors on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. It was initiated in 1991 (SAPALDIA 1, N = 9,000) and has since had two follow-up surveys in 2002 (SAPALDIA 2: N = 6,000) and 2012/13 (SAPALDIA 3: N = 4,000). The IKC analyzed the samples of SAPALDIA 2 and SAPALDIA 3.
  • Through its analytics, the IKC supports the SNF-funded Special Program University Medicine Project Acute Coronary Syndrome SPUM-ACS, which has recruited and followed up more than 3000 patients with ACS in the University Hospitals of Zurich, Bern, Lausanne and Geneva.
  • The IKC is the central laboratory of the DO-HEALTH study funded by the European Commission. Since December 2012, 2152 men and women aged 70 years and older were recruited in seven European cities and randomized to interventions with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids or physical training. The effects on chronic diseases and life expectancy are monitored over a four-year follow-up period. The IKC examines a wide range of biomarkers in samples obtained during baseline and annual follow-up visits.
