Natural birth - safe with professional support
The birth of a child is a unique and profound experience in the life of a family. In our modern maternity ward, we attach great importance to making this experience as natural, safe and pleasant as possible. Whenever there is no medical reason not to, the midwives in our department are at the center of obstetric care. They are your main contact persons and accompany you continuously throughout the entire birth process. Our midwives are highly qualified and experienced to offer you the best possible support. They strengthen your confidence in your own strength and in the natural course of the birth.
Our concept is strongly inspired by midwife-led birth. With our experience and expertise, we have developed a unique model that combines the benefits of midwife-led birth with the convenience and safety of a modern maternity ward. Thanks to the trusting and respectful cooperation between all professional groups, births where there is no medical reason not to do so are placed in the hands of midwives, who only call in doctors on an ad hoc basis and when necessary. This allows you to give birth naturally and safely.
Safety and comfort
Even with the focus on a natural birth, you don’t have to give up any of the comforts that are important to you. For example, we offer various methods of pain relief, including the option of epidural anesthesia (PDA). Strictly speaking, this is not possible with a midwife-assisted birth.
During childbirth, even if everything has gone smoothly and naturally so far, unexpected situations can occur that can be dangerous for you or your baby. Our interdisciplinary team of experienced doctors is on hand in the background to intervene immediately if necessary. This gives you the security of knowing that you and your baby are well looked after at all times. Our aim is to provide you with a birth that meets your individual needs and wishes.
Individual care and self-determination
We believe that every birth is unique and should be accompanied individually. Our midwives take the time to listen to your wishes and needs and support you in your decisions. They will provide you with advice and support and help you to have a self-determined and positive birth experience.
Our birthing rooms are designed to make you feel comfortable and secure. You can move around freely, try out different birthing positions and design the environment as you wish. We support you in experiencing the birth as naturally and actively as possible.

A USZ midwife talks about her everyday life
Our midwife Marianne Büeler-Dill has attended hundreds of births. She talks about her work in our podcast.
Frequently asked questions
The obstetrics clinic at the USZ has a very good care ratio, better than in most other hospitals. This means that we can almost always offer very good midwife care (1:1) for the women giving birth. Women are primarily cared for by midwives during childbirth. Nevertheless, there are always doctors on call in the background, and our department is also located right next to the neonatology department, which offers additional safety in emergencies.
Even without a high-risk pregnancy, you will benefit from particularly safe, modern and individual care at the USZ. The award as the best maternity clinic in Switzerland, the top medical infrastructure and the round-the-clock presence of experienced specialists from all disciplines make the USZ a very good and safe choice for your birth – regardless of how your pregnancy progresses.
Both concepts are very similar and have in common that the birth is managed by midwives. Both concepts focus on a natural and low-intervention birth with individual care.
With midwife-assisted birth, however, some medical comforts are foregone, especially in the area of pain relief. In contrast, in our concept it is possible to receive pain relief methods such as an epidural and still be guided through the birth by the midwife.
A physiological pregnancy refers to a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy that proceeds without significant medical problems or complications. It is characterized by the following features:
- Pregnancy progresses in the usual phases, with an average duration of around 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstruation.
- Both the mother and the unborn child are healthy.
- The pregnant woman is gaining weight at a healthy and appropriate rate, which indicates good nutrition and general health.
- There are no complications such as gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia (pregnancy poisoning), premature labor or other problems.
- The pregnant woman is preparing for a vaginal birth and there are no indications that a caesarean section or other medical interventions will be necessary.
- The pregnant woman feels emotionally and psychologically well and there are no signs of depression, anxiety or other psychological problems.
The physiological pregnancy is accompanied by regular check-ups – for example in our midwife consultation – in order to monitor the well-being of mother and child and identify possible risks at an early stage.
A physiological birth is a spontaneous, complication-free birth process in which the baby and the placenta are born through the mother’s natural labor forces without the need for medical intervention. The birth can be attended by a midwife without the need for medical intervention.
Physiological birth in the hands of a midwife offers individual, continuous and emotional care, promotes a natural birth process with fewer medical interventions and supports the mother’s self-determination, which leads to a more positive birth experience. In addition, both the mother and the baby benefit from comprehensive aftercare and breastfeeding support, which contribute to better recovery and health.
Regularly awarded specialist clinic
The Department of Obstetrics at the USZ was recognized as the best specialist clinic in Switzerland by the “Handelszeitung” in collaboration with the market research company Statista and regularly occupies top positions in national comparisons. The positive reviews from medical experts in particular underline the clinic’s high reputation throughout Switzerland. The clinic’s new premises are also making an impact: the equipment in the birthing rooms scores highly as a “standout treatment”.
