Pregnant women with increased risk

We care for women whose pregnancies require increased control and monitoring due to complications. Very often, the goal is to stop an impending premature birth.

The focus is on accompanying and supporting pregnant women, preserving their resources and supporting them in crises. We also care for women with miscarriages and stillbirths. In addition to all medical therapies, complementary methods are also used.

Admission and stay

If you are found to have a problem during your pregnancy check-up that requires further management of your pregnancy in the context of hospitalization with us, your attending gynecologist will register you directly with us.

Admission is then directly to the prenatal department. The admission examinations (ultrasound, CTG) are initially performed in the Birth Center.

Examples of typical problem cases

  • Premature birth attempts(premature rupture of membranes, premature labor, cervical insufficiency)
  • vaginal bleeding (placenta praevia, placental abruption, premature partial placental abruption)
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • intrauterine deficiency development
  • High blood pressure
  • Pregnant women with severe diseases (e.g. kidney or heart diseases).

Different therapies (e.g., tocolysis, lowering blood pressure) are used depending on the pregnancy problem. In addition, the child is monitored by means of ultrasound and CTG checks.

During the inpatient stay, the ward physician makes daily rounds and regularly consults with the responsible senior physician.

Furthermore, a chief physician and senior physician visit takes place once a week.

Best specialist clinic in Switzerland 2024

The Department of Obstetrics at the USZ was evaluated for the first time in 2024 by the “Handelszeitung” in collaboration with the German market research company Statista and immediately took the top spot at this premiere – well ahead of the competition. The fact that medical experts gave very good ratings in the online survey underlines the clinic’s high reputation throughout Switzerland. The clinic’s new premises are also making an impact: the equipment in the birthing rooms scores highly as a “standout treatment”.
