Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK)

In Descemet's membrane endothelial transplantation, the Descemet's membrane is transplanted together with endothelium. This is a further development of lamellar endothelial transplantation. Since no corneal stroma is transplanted, the postoperative anatomy is close to the natural anatomy.

Such an operation is indicated if there is a disease exclusively of the corneal endothelium, so that the cornea is swollen and therefore no longer sufficiently transparent due to corneal endothelial dysfunction.

The process of donor corneal preparation and the actual transplantation, i.e. the insertion of the endothelial Descemet roll into the recipient eye and the tamponade with sterile air, is illustrated schematically and pictorially below using a specific case.
