Breast implant exchange

There may be various reasons why an implant change is necessary.

Breast implants are only changed if they cause problems or discomfort. Rupture of an implant with silicone leakage is an indication for removal or replacement of the implant. Furthermore, capsular fibrosis, a tissue reaction of the body around the implant, which can lead to pain and changes in shape, is another indication.

Procedure

Breast implants are changed under general anesthesia. The old prosthesis is removed through an incision in the course of the old scars and the new one is fitted and the skin closed. Depending on your wishes and the location of the old prosthesis, this can be done above or below the large chest muscles. A small tube is usually inserted into each breast to drain the wound fluid, which can usually be removed the following day.

The alternative to changing the implant is to remove the implant. This can be combined with a breast lift or injection of autologous fat.

Aftercare

A chest band is worn day and night for the first two weeks. After about two weeks, the stitches are usually removed and the wound is checked for the first time. A sports bra must be worn for a total of six weeks and no sport should be practiced. The scar should be cared for and massaged with a moisturizing cream for a year to achieve the best result. It is essential to avoid direct sunlight on the scar. Check-ups are usually scheduled at least after two, six and twelve weeks.
