Men’s health is a sensitive topic: complaints relating to fertility, sexual function or the androgen balance (male sex hormones) can be very stressful. The triggers can be very diverse, such as diabetes, hormonal imbalances, an unhealthy lifestyle, taking certain medications – as well as permanent physical or mental overload.
The male sex hormones play an important role in many aspects of health and are significant for fertility, muscle building and fat distribution, bone health and also for the formation of red blood cells. A testosterone deficiency can manifest itself in extreme tiredness, depressive moods, changes in sexuality or infertility.
Andrology is a discipline that combines expertise from urology, endocrinology, general, sexual and reproductive medicine and offers holistic solutions for issues relating to men’s sexual and reproductive health.
Preserving fertility - prevention through cryopreservation
Certain medical treatments – such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or long-term use of fertility-damaging medication – can impair or permanently limit fertility. In such situations, precautionary cryopreservation (freezing) of sperm cells offers a valuable way of preserving your own fertility.
The retrieved sperm are deep-frozen in a specialized procedure and can be used for assisted fertilization (e.g. IVF or ICSI) if required – even after many years. This preserves the chance of biological paternity at a later date.
We will be happy to advise you personally on the procedure, options and costs of cryopreservation.
Unfulfilled desire to have children
The desire to have children is a common concern – but often the medical focus is initially on the woman. Studies show that in around 50% of cases, male factors also contribute to the lack of pregnancy. Many of these causes can be identified and treated.
Male fertility depends on various aspects: Sperm quality can be influenced by hormonal balance, lifestyle, infections, genetic causes and environmental factors. Diseases such as varicose veins in the testicles (varicocele), testicular tumors, hormonal disorders or chronic illnesses can also affect fertility.
Other factors that have an influence include:
- Age: The number and quality of sperm decreases with age.
- Diet and exercise: Obesity, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet can affect hormone production and sperm parameters.
- Smoking, alcohol and drugs: These substances have a negative effect on sperm.
- Occupational and environmental stress: Heat, chemicals or pollutants in the workplace can reduce sperm quality.
- Stress and psychological strain: Mental factors can also influence hormone balance and sexual function.
