Digital Health Assistants: What Smartwatches Can Do for Your Heart

Today, smartwatches and smartphones track far more than just steps and calories. They can detect heart rhythm abnormalities, provide indications of increased risks, and encourage users to adopt a healthier lifestyle. But how reliable is the data, and what are its limitations?

In just a few years, modern wearables have evolved from fitness gadgets to health companions. They monitor your heart rate around the clock, create heart rate profiles, and many models can even record an ECG. A particular focus is placed on atrial fibrillation, the most common type of persistent cardiac arrhythmia. Studies show that smartwatches can detect this condition with a high degree of accuracy, especially when the analysis of heart rate variability is combined with an ECG feature.

Despite the high accuracy rate, it’s important to remember that a warning message on your watch does not constitute a diagnosis. Movement, technical artifacts, or other cardiac arrhythmias can also cause abnormal readings. For this reason, any such symptoms should always be evaluated by a doctor. Wearables can therefore be a valuable tool for early detection, but they are no substitute for a medical examination or a professional ECG.

More Than Just Heart Rhythm: Potential for Prevention

The development of these devices is advancing rapidly. In addition to heart rate and pulse, modern wearables now track a wide range of other health metrics, including physical activity, sleep patterns, and—in some models—even blood pressure. This allows them to motivate people to be more active, sleep more regularly, or recognize changes in their health early on.

“The great strength of wearables lies in raising people’s awareness of their health. “However, the data only becomes truly effective when it is integrated into personalized medical care,” said Brunckhorst.

It is precisely these behavioral changes that could make an important contribution to heart health in the long term. At the same time, researchers hope that wearables can help detect previously undiagnosed cardiovascular diseases at an earlier stage. However, it has not yet been conclusively determined whether widespread screening using smartwatches actually leads to fewer strokes or cardiovascular diseases. Professional associations therefore emphasize that abnormal findings should always be addressed within the framework of structured medical care. What matters is not just collecting data, but interpreting and using it correctly.

When Health Data Becomes a Source of Stress

As useful as digital health tools may be, they also carry risks. Some users check their readings several times a day and become anxious at the slightest deviation. The desire for control can thus lead to additional stress.

“Health data should provide guidance, not cause fear. “It’s important to view the measured values in the right context and not let individual fluctuations unsettle you,” Brunckhorst emphasizes. The expert also warns against so-called overdiagnosis. In the process, abnormalities are detected that might never have caused any symptoms or resulted in any demonstrable harm to health. This can lead to further tests, unnecessary worry, or even treatments without any clear health benefits.

Wearables should therefore be viewed as a tool to assist users, not as a constant health monitor that dictates every decision. When it comes to heart health, the traditional factors remain crucial: regular exercise, a balanced, healthy diet, not smoking, monitoring blood pressure, and treating known risk factors. A smartwatch can help you stay on track with these goals, but it can’t replace them.
