Rolf Lefering, PhD, Professor was born on 20.05.1960 in Ahaus, Germany and he is the Director of the Institute for Research in Operative Medicine (IFOM), University Witten/Herdecke, Cologne, Germany.
He studied Mathematics at the University of Münster from 1981 to 1988, where he obtained his Diploma. In 1996 he received his doctorate (Dr. rer. medic.) from the University of Cologne with a thesis entitled “Classification trees and logistic regression.”
From 1989 to 2005, he worked as a research assistant at the 2nd Department of Surgery at the University of Cologne. In 2007 he completed his habilitation at the University Witten/Herdecke with the thesis “Development of a prediction score: RISC,” and in 2010 he obtained the Venia Legendi for Surgical Research. Since 2005 he has been affiliated with the University Witten/Herdecke, Campus Cologne.
In 2014 he became Head of the Institute for Research in Operative Medicine (IFOM), University of Witten/Herdecke, Cologne, Germany.
In addition to his academic roles, he has been the responsible statistician for the TraumaRegister DGU® since 1996 and for the European EuReCa studies (cardiac arrest). He also serves as a consultant statistician for the German Cardiac Arrest Registry and the Severe Burns Registry. Furthermore, he has acted as responsible statistician for several clinical trials, including SAWHI, DiaFu, NoTamp, BIOLAP, and LAPSIS, and he is a member of several Data Safety Monitoring Boards. He is also a lecturer in statistics at the University Witten/Herdecke.
Within the scientific community, he is a member of several professional societies, including GMDS, DGU, and DIVI. He also serves on the editorial boards of European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, Unfallchirurgie, and Scandinavian Journal of Trauma.
His main scientific interests include the development of prediction models, the use of medical registries, and research on quality of life. He has authored or co-authored a total of 759 publications, including 553 peer-reviewed original articles and 92 review papers. His work has been cited 620 times in PubMed-indexed literature.
