Andrology laboratory of the Clinic for Reproductive Endocrinology

The andrology laboratory deals with the examination, preparation and cryopreservation of sperm, sperm cells and testicular tissue. Disorders in this area are treated in close cooperation with the Department of Urology.

Information on seed collection and conservation

  • Semen collection for analysis of the ejaculate: Semen collection usually takes place on site. We will allocate you a room exclusively for this purpose. If you exceptionally bring the sample from home after consultation with the andrology laboratory, you must transport the special beaker at body temperature. In order for the semen sample to be examined, it is necessary for the seminal fluid to be brought to our laboratory within one hour. The waiting period, i.e. the time since the last ejaculation, should be two to five days.
  • Semen collection for cryopreservation: In order for cryopreservation to be carried out optimally, the semen must be collected on site. We will allocate you a room exclusively for this purpose. You should not ejaculate for two to five days before the examination.

Frequently asked questions about the andrology laboratory

Are there any medications that have an unfavorable effect on sperm quality?

Yes, e.g. antibiotics and the painkiller ibuprofen can have an unfavorable effect on sperm quality. For this reason, fertility treatment should ideally only be carried out 3 months after the end of such therapy. If a corresponding therapy is unavoidable in the 3 months before the start of therapy, a medication should be selected with the attending physician that has as little unfavorable effect as possible on sperm quality.

How long should a man refrain from taking medication that is unfavorable for sperm quality before undergoing fertility treatment?

Since an ejaculate always contains sperm that has been produced in the past three months, there should be no damaging influences on the sperm in the three months prior to fertility treatment.

What should I look out for before a spermiogram?

Ideally, you should not ejaculate for two to five days beforehand. Please also refer to our instructions for obtaining seeds.

Recommendations to improve sperm quality?

A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and physical activity that is neither too little nor too intense are important prerequisites for normal fertility. Abstaining from nicotine not only improves your fertility, but also your general state of health and the conditions for a healthy upbringing of a child. In addition, taking zinc and selenium can have a positive effect on sperm quality.

If the spermiogram is unfavorable, we will arrange for an examination by an andrologist (a doctor who specializes in sperm problems) and give you further recommendations on this basis.

Can I come in for a spermiogram without an appointment?

Unfortunately, this is not possible for organizational reasons. Please make an appointment by telephone (+41 44 255 53 79) or by e-mail(andrologie.labor@usz.ch).

Do I need a doctor’s referral for a sperm analysis (spermiogram)?

No, you do not need a bank transfer. However, the spermiogram is only covered by basic insurance if you have been referred in writing for this examination by your doctor.

What does a spermiogram cost?

The costs are covered by your health insurance if you have been referred for this examination by your doctor in writing (letter or e-mail). Depending on the work involved, the costs can be up to CHF 370.00.

Can I have sperm frozen at my own request?

Yes, this is possible. Please make an appointment by telephone (+41 44 255 53 79) or by e-mail(andrologie.labor@usz.ch). Please note that we require a current test for hepatitis (liver inflammation) B, C and HIV.

Where is the andrology laboratory located?

The andrology laboratory is located in the NORD1 building of the USZ.
