Procedure
If a biopsy carried out beforehand reveals an advanced precancerous stage, the diseased area of the cervix can be removed by conization and examined further. The procedure thus enables further diagnostics and, in most cases, treatment. Curettage of the cervical canal usually follows conization. A distinction is made between different conization techniques:
- Scalpel
- Laser
- electric loop or LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure)
- High frequency loop removal
In some cases, LEEP conizations can be performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis in our dysplasia consultation. Short-term inpatient treatment is also possible, depending on the findings and the patient’s wishes. The main aim of conization is to completely remove the precancerous stage under the gentlest possible conditions. The latter is particularly important for women who still wish to have children, as the cervix ensures that the uterus is closed while the child is growing.
