USZ helps shape the international guidelines on electrode extraction

The Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital of Zurich is the only European institution involved in developing the new international guidelines for electrode extraction. This underscores its leading role in this highly specialized field of treatment.

Electrode extraction —that is, the removal of pacemaker and ICD electrodes that are no longer needed or have become infected—is a complex procedure. It is performed only at a few specialized centers. Participation in the development of the current international guidelines, which were recently published by the American Heart Rhythm Society, is therefore of great importance. The USZ, represented by Prof. Dr. Alexander Breitenstein, is the only European institution involved in the development of these key, globally applicable recommendations. As a senior physician in the Department of Cardiology, Breitenstein is responsible for device implantations and extractions.

Clinical Excellence as a Foundation

Participation in the development of the guidelines is based on proven clinical and scientific expertise. The USZ performs the most electrode extractions in Switzerland and is one of the leading centers in this field in Europe. For our patients and referring physicians, this means a high level of safety and extensive experience in treating complex cases. Comprehensive care of the highest standard is provided through an interdisciplinary approach and is supported by the Department of Cardiac Surgery, the Cardiac Anesthesia Unit, and specially trained surgical nursing staff. Together, we are proud to have played a decisive role in shaping this field.
