Smoking counseling (nicotine cessation) consultation

Tobacco consumption is not only associated with a high incidence of cancer and vascular disease, but can also lead to non-malignant respiratory diseases, infections, osteoporosis, dental and gum disease and impaired sense of taste, smell and sight. Smoking advice is aimed at people who want to stop smoking.

The nicotine cessation consultation at the USZ takes place in the Clinic for Cardiology. This is aimed at patients and employees of the University Hospital Zurich as well as external persons. In personal counseling sessions before and after you stop smoking, we prepare you for quitting and accompany and support you on your way to a smoke-free future. The consultation usually lasts two to three months with a six-monthly and an annual follow-up consultation.

In an initial meeting:

  • We collect your personal smoking history (smoking history)
  • Let us inform you about the addictive processes surrounding smoking
  • Let’s discuss smoking motives, trigger situations and coping strategies
  • If necessary, we will discuss and clarify the use of medical support
  • Let’s plan your stop smoking day with you

In counseling sessions after quitting smoking:

  • Let’s discuss with you the progress since the last meeting
  • Advice on difficulties and withdrawal symptoms
  • Let’s discuss the prevention of possible weight gain
  • We plan strategies with you to prevent a relapse
  • Let us affirm you and strengthen your motivation to stay smoke-free!
