While the surgical colleagues concentrate on the complex operations, you will be looked after by a senior consultant and a junior doctor from the Institute of Anesthesia, who will ensure that breathing, cardiovascular and other basic functions of life are maintained.
Before, during and after the procedure, we monitor your depth of anesthesia, ECG, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, breathing and, in special cases, even heart function using ultrasound technology. In most cases, general anesthesia is used. For large laparotomies (abdominal operations with a large abdominal incision), general anesthesia and epidural anesthesia are usually used in combination.
Special features of anesthesia in visceral surgery
In liver surgery in particular, blood coagulation can change significantly due to the loss of large quantities of blood during the operation. With the help of modern techniques, blood coagulation can be measured in the operating room and corrected if necessary. This significantly limits the administration of foreign blood during the operation.
In bariatrics, we focus on the needs of severely overweight patients. Thanks to our many years of experience, we can precisely define which anesthesia procedure is optimal for which patient during the preparation phase. For example, awake fiberoptic anesthesia induction can often be replaced by a special procedure developed at the Institute of Anesthesiology (Sensa Scope ®).
