Due to the large number of possible differential diagnoses, laboratory diagnostics are essential for the detection of a fungal infection. A direct microscopy is carried out in the laboratory and a culture is created on several culture media, which are incubated for up to four weeks.
Treatment of skin fungi is carried out topically for smaller, localized and mild infections, for example with nail varnish or a cream containing antimycotics. Systemic treatment with antimycotics is necessary in the case of large-scale, chronic or severely inflamed infections affecting several areas.
