Because there are so many possible differential diagnoses, laboratory testing is essential for detecting a fungal infection. In the laboratory, direct microscopy is performed, and a culture is prepared on several culture media, which are incubated for up to four weeks.
For minor, localized, and mild fungal skin infections, treatment involves topical medications, such as nail polish or a cream containing antifungal agents. In cases of extensive infections, those affecting multiple sites, chronic infections, or severely inflamed infections, systemic treatment with antifungal medications is required.
