Research Group Roberto Speck

Our overarching goal is to gain a profound understanding of HIV pathogenesis and the complex immune network, expand the possibilities of gene manipulation, and simultaneously provide preclinical evidence for the feasibility of future clinical studies.

Our research initiative in the field of experimental HIV medicine is extremely active and focuses in particular on immunotherapy and the development of an HIV-resistant immune system through genetic engineering. We also dedicate ourselves to the genetic modification of monocytes/macrophages for cancer combat. We employ a wide range of in vitro and in vivo methods for these purposes. Our overarching goal is to gain a profound understanding of HIV pathogenesis and the complex immune network, expand the possibilities of gene manipulation, and simultaneously provide preclinical evidence for the feasibility of future clinical studies.

Prof. Dr. Speck’s laboratory is well integrated into Zurich’s research landscape and benefits greatly from its unique scientific wealth. In particular, we would like to highlight our vibrant international collaborations, where we work with Professor Dr. Oliver Keppler from LMU Munich (Germany), Prof. PhD Benjamin Berkhout and PhD Elena Herrera Carrillo from UMC Amsterdam (Netherlands), PD Dr. Klaus‐Peter Knobeloch from the University of Freiburg (Germany), Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Pantaleo, Dr. Craig Fenwick, and Dr. Yannick Muller from CHUV Lausanne (Switzerland).

Our laboratory is generously supported financially by various foundations, including the Swiss National Foundation, the Swiss Vaccination Institute and the VonTobel Foundation.
