Hair and nail diseases are common. And in many cases it is easily treatable. Early clarification of the cause is crucial.
Medically, hair and nails are skin appendages; nature intended them as protection. Magnificent hair is also a sign of beauty, strength and attractiveness, and hair has an eminent influence on a person’s appearance. Because hair and nails are clearly visible, changes in their condition are quickly noticed. And these are not uncommon. “The most common changes concern the hair and the amount of hair: there are too many or too few,” explains Thomas Kündig, Director of the Dermatology Clinic at the USZ. Every day, 20 to 30 patients come to the consultation for this reason.
No time to lose when losing hair
Thomas Kündig advises that a dermatologist should quickly clarify whether there is an underlying disease. Because as often as hair problems occur, it is reassuring that in the vast majority of cases the cause can be found quickly and effective treatment is available. “There is no scientific evidence for the influence of dietary changes and special diets, or for many non-medical therapies for hair and nail problems,” explains Thomas Kündig. “Attempts to do so only prolong the period of suffering and, in the worst case, hair is also irretrievably lost until effective treatment by specialists.”
