Zsolt J. Balogh, MD, PhD, FRACS, FAOrthA, FACS, Professor Head of Traumatology and Surgery, Traumatology Research Group, University of Newcastle, NWS, Australia
Professor Zsolt J. Balogh is an international leader in Trauma and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. He is the Professor of Traumatology and Surgery at the University of Newcastle and the Director of Trauma at John Hunter Hospital, Australia. He is leading the Injury and Trauma Research Program at the Hunter Medical Research Institute and Convening the Master of Traumatology international postgraduate education program at the University of Newcastle. He is an active practicing trauma surgeon with special clinical and research interest in polytrauma, traumatic shock resuscitation, multiple organ failure, pelvic and acetabulum fractures. His institution manages over 500 ISS>15 trauma patients annually with the lowest risk adjusted mortality rate in Australia and New Zealand. Professor Balogh’s research output is highlighted by over 300 peer-reviewed publications, more than 25,500 citations and HGS-Index: 64 (April 2023). His last 5 years FWCI: 2.29. He is the recipient of Australia’s most prestigious surgical award; the John Mitchell Crouch fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Associations Research Award. He is Australia’s top researcher in 2020 and 2021 in the emergency medicine category. He currently supervises 10 PhD and 14 MD students in the fields of clinical and experimental traumatology. Dr Balogh is a member of numerous professional and academic medical societies including the AAST, ESTES, OTA, WTA, IATSIC, AAOS, SICOT and the past President of the Australasian Orthopaedic Trauma Society, and past Trustee and Chair of the Pelvic and Acetabulum task force of the AO Foundation. He has been honoured by many leading international surgical societies as keynote speaker including the American College of Surgeons and the DGU. Dr Balogh is dedicated to shape scientific knowledge in trauma care via editorial positions with seven leading peer-reviewed journals in additions to dozens of editorial board and reviewer roles. He is also a grant reviewer for several country’s top medical research funds, including the Swiss National Science Foundation. As a passionate amateur conservation biologist he has established and contributed to a number of biodiversity conservation and restoration reserves around the world.
