Your outpatient stay

In the case of an outpatient stay, you will usually return home on the same day. Here you will find all the important information about your outpatient stay with us.

Registration with us

Your doctor will register you for an outpatient examination or treatment at the USZ. You will then receive an appointment invitation from us with the necessary information for your appointment. If special preparation is required for your appointment, we will make a note of it there.

Admission

You will receive the date and exact time of your appointment from our patient scheduling department. We recommend that you reserve sufficient time for your examination or procedure, as unforeseen emergencies may postpone our scheduling. Please register at the reception on the date and time indicated.

Discharge

If you have an outpatient procedure with us, you can usually leave the USZ on the same day. In exceptional cases, it may be necessary for you to stay with us for one night. You will be looked after by our nursing staff until you are discharged.

Please note that you are not fit to drive for 24 hours after anesthesia. Therefore, organize an accompanying person in good time to pick you up and, ideally, to stay with you. Your judgment may also be impaired. Therefore, you must not make any important decisions, such as signing contracts, for 24 hours after the anesthetic.

What should I take with me?

  • Personal identification (identity card, passport or foreigner’s identity card)
  • Insurance card (health insurance, accident certificate)
  • Appointment invitation from us or referral papers from your doctor
  • Documents from preliminary examinations (X-rays, doctor’s reports, etc.)
  • Blood group and vaccination card, allergy passport, diabetes control booklet or other medical IDs

If available:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes
  • at most, entertainment electronics (music, movies and games with headphones only, please) or something to read

We recommend leaving valuables (e.g. jewelry, expensive watches, large sums of money or expensive electronic devices) at home. The University Hospital Zurich accepts no liability for loss or damage. You can deposit valuables and cash at the main cash desk.

If you lose something during your stay, our lost property service will help you.

Good to know

Your treatment will be billed directly to your health insurance or accident insurance company in accordance with the current tariffs and contracts. Please clarify the cost coverage of your insurance in advance.
