Choline is a substance produced naturally by the body; it is taken up by cells with high membrane turnover and incorporated into the cell membrane. 18F-choline PET/CT or PET/MR is a highly sensitive test for diagnosing and localizing parathyroid adenomas in patients with hyperparathyroidism. >The examination is suitable both for initial evaluation and for patients in whom other imaging methods have so far failed to provide a diagnosis (success rate: 90%).
A parathyroid adenoma (arrow) was detected in front of the trachea. 18F-choline may still be used in isolated cases for the diagnosis of prostate cancer in patients. Since 2016, however, 18F-PSMA has been used almost exclusively for this purpose.
