Punch biopsy

In the case of findings that require clarification or to confirm a diagnosis, a so-called punch biopsy may be indicated.

Procedure

A punch biopsy is usually preceded by a colposcopy. A special instrument is used to remove a cylinder measuring just a few millimeters in diameter. To stop bleeding, a single button suture with a suture that dissolves as it progresses is rarely necessary; in most cases, sutures can be dispensed with altogether. Depending on the location of the findings to be clarified, a local anesthetic is administered beforehand, so that the sample can be taken without pain. The removal of more extensive findings usually requires local anesthesia and wound care with self-dissolving suture. The material obtained is then forwarded to the pathology department for microscopic examination. You are welcome to come to our dysplasia consultation for advice and a check-up.
