Corneal transplants

In corneal transplants, diseased or scarred parts of the patient's own cornea are replaced with healthy corneal tissue from a suitable donor. Corneal transplants have been performed on humans since 1906. Their techniques were refined and diversified over time.

We perform the following corneal transplantation techniques at the Eye Clinic of the University Hospital Zurich:

The procedures mentioned differ in the tissue depth of the cornea in which the patient’s own tissue is replaced by donor tissue (see the schematic representation of corneas in cross-section below with the transplantation area highlighted in gray according to the surgical technique).
