The treatment of brain aneurysms requires the utmost precision and a great deal of experience. For years, the specialists at the USZ have been making important contributions to the understanding and treatment of these diseases. At the University Hospital of Zurich, patients benefit from a combination of high levels of clinical specialization, state-of-the-art technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration—a combination that is possible in this form at only a few centers.
Interdisciplinary Case Discussions
Every unruptured cerebral aneurysm is presented at a specialized conference on vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord, attended by experts in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and neurology. In the event of a ruptured aneurysm, a treatment plan is immediately established on a 24/7 basis through an interdisciplinary approach involving specialists in neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, and neurocritical care. This close collaboration enables treatment decisions that are tailored to the individual and safe.
State-of-the-art diagnostics and technology
The University Hospital of Zurich uses state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment techniques. These technologies make it possible to visualize even the smallest vascular changes in the brain or spinal cord with great precision and to plan and carry out treatments with a high degree of safety.
These include:
- High-resolution MRI and CT
- state-of-the-art catheter angiography
- Perfusion and Functional Imaging
During surgery, state-of-the-art technical procedures also help ensure the safety of theprocedure.⁶ These include intraoperative ultrasound and computer-assisted neuronavigation. Using fluorescence techniques (“ICG angiography”), blood flow in the vessels can be visualized directly during surgery. In addition, a specialized team uses neuromonitoring to monitor key brain and nerve functions throughout the entire operation in order to minimize the risk of damage to healthy structures. This state-of-the-art equipment, combined with our experts’ many years of experience, helps ensure that procedures are performed with precision, care, and the highest possible level of safety.
All forms of therapy under one roof
The USZ offers all established treatment methods, including microsurgery, endovascular procedures, and neurocritical care. This allows us to combine therapeutic approaches on an individual basis and tailor them optimally to each patient’s specific condition and life situation.
