Sandra is in her mid-50s, athletic, and has never smoked. Nevertheless, the Lucerne native was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. A broken foot sustained while attending an open-air concert led to this chance diagnosis and ultimately to the USZ, where she was able to recover thanks to medical expertise and state-of-the-art robotic technology. Always by her side: a nursing expert who guided her through the entire treatment process.
I never would have thought that a broken foot would end up being a blessing in disguise. But that’s exactly how it turned out. As a result of the fracture, I first developed a thrombosis, followed by a life-threatening pulmonary embolism as a further complication. Because I was still having trouble breathing months after my recovery, my family doctor referred me to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. I hadn’t received a definitive diagnosis at that point. It wasn’t until a robot-assisted bronchoscopy was performed at the USZ that the situation became clear. The changes in my lungs had nothing to do with the pulmonary embolism; they found a carcinoma—that is, a malignant tumor.
The cancer diagnosis was difficult for me and my family. I had a lot of unanswered questions and was glad that, at the USZ, I had a nursing expert by my side who was always there for me. A designated point of contact who is familiar with my medical history and can answer my questions. She told me I could call her anytime. When I’m feeling unsure, when I need information about my therapy, or when I’m not feeling well mentally. This kind of support was very valuable during this challenging phase.
Everything Under One Roof – The Care Pathway at the USZ
Right from our first meeting, “my” nursing specialist calmly and clearly explained to me what the process at the USZ would be like. She took the time to talk with me during the appointment and explained medical terms in a way I could understand. She served as a valuable link between me and the medical team. Once it became clear that I needed surgery and I arrived at the USZ, my nurse specialist gave me an envelope containing informational materials. She went over the important points with me and explained the treatment steps to me again.
The surgery was a success. The tumor was completely removed, along with a few lymph nodes as a precaution. Fortunately, I didn’t have any offshoots. Many specialists from various fields were responsible for the treatment. Even so, I never felt like I was losing track of things. Because there was always that one person there who knew where I stood, what had already been discussed, and what was coming next.

Since I recovered physically quite quickly, I wasn’t dependent on the nursing expert around the clock. But knowing that I can get in touch with her at any time, even after my treatment at the USZ is over, makes me feel good.
My guardian angel made me trip, and it was only because of my broken foot that my lung cancer was diagnosed early, which saved my life. I didn’t need chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and I was able to leave the USZ shortly after my surgery. At the moment, I’m considered healthy. I am aware that many other patients do not have it this way and that their course of treatment is longer and more intensive. In this situation, knowing that you are in the good hands of top doctors, competent nursing staff, and a dedicated and very personable nursing specialist at the USZ instills confidence and provides a sense of security.
