In the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027” ranking, the USZ ranks first in Switzerland in eight medical specialties. A total of eleven departments at the University Hospital of Zurich have been recognized, making them among the nation's leading specialty hospitals.
Newsweek’s international ranking, “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals,” once again lists the University Hospital of Zurich among Switzerland’s leading specialty hospitals. The departments that have received awards include cardiology, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, gynecology and obstetrics, oncology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. Several areas have continued to improve their performance compared to the previous year.
Recognition for Medical Quality
The ranking is compiled annually by Newsweek and Statista. It is based primarily on a global survey of doctors, healthcare professionals, and hospital administrators. In addition, quality and accreditation data, as well as the use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), are taken into account. PROMs measure treatment outcomes from the patients’ perspective and support quality improvement in health care.
A total of 13 medical specialties are included. The USZ ranks among the top institutions in the country in eleven of these areas, and eight departments rank first in Switzerland.

The award recognizes the close connection between university-based patient care, research, innovation, and clinical expertise. It is also a reflection of the collaboration among numerous professional groups, clinics, and departments.
