The clipping of a cerebral aneurysm requires a deep knowledge of the anatomy as well as excellent surgical skills. In a time where a substantial number of aneurysms is treated by endovascular methods, it becomes more challenging to gain and to improve the surgical skills necessary to clip an aneurysm. Therefore hands-on training on surgical models becomes even more important to learn the safe application of clips.
This course concept was developed for consultants in vascular neurosurgery based on the experience of the Neurosurgical Department of the University Hospital Zurich in cooperation with the Aesculap Akademie. It provides an excellent opportunity to get both theoretical knowledge and practical training on the safe application of the Aesculap YASARGIL Aneurysm Clips. Different surgical approaches are explained and shown by the tutors and performed by the participants on cadaver models. Moreover, innovative surgical models such as perfused cadaver heads and placentas will be used to train the microdissection of vessels, of arachnoid and the safe clip application in a very realistic way. A newly developed virtual reality system will allow the participants to ‘dive’ into a patients head for getting a new perspective and even deeper understanding of the anatomy.
The Anatomical Institute of the University Tübingen offers a state-of-the art equipment for this hands-on course and an environment that stimulates interactions with the international faculty of renowned leaders in the field of aneurysm clipping. After the hands-on part you have the unique opportunity to observe live surgery in the University Hospital Zurich and to see aneurysm surgery with YASARGIL aneurysm clips in the place where they were invented and initially used by Prof. M. Gazi Yasargil over 50 years ago.
